Introduction to the Principal
Woodknowledgy is essentially Shaun Hayward and a number of associates who are called in as required. Here is Shaun's bio.
Shaun started in the industry in 1985 training as a fine furniture maker / designer. For over seven years he made everything from production hand mirrors, tables, chairs through to larger commissions. He was the assistant craftsman for the construction of the Speakers Chair, Australian Parliament House and was in fact the first person to sit in it! He made the desk for the President of the Senate around the same time. He made presentation gavels for Prime Minister Bob Hawke to gift in America, crafted the tables for Charles Sturt University Chancery Building in Bathurst and worked on prototype furniture for Parliament House. As an apprentice cabinetmaker and furniture maker Shaun made countless tables, chairs, miscellaneous wooden items and processed tonnes of timber using basic machinery.
Moving on from the workshop Shaun became the Branch Manager for a Canberra timber supplier. Handling over 70 species he serviced the whole of Canberra, South Coast, Riverina and up to Dubbo. He grew the business from a small agency to a decent sized operation.
In 2000 he became full time self employed operating a woodwork gallery, workshop and cafe in Bredbo, NSW. This business, Monaro Wood World, started as an empty building and with his wife Lianne they established a popular and well regarded local business. In 2002 he took over the old timber yard in Canberra he had previously managed and established Monaro Timber. A year later the workshop was combined with the timber yard and the Gallery closed to focus on the timber yard. In 2009 the business moved to larger premises in Queanbeyan and in 2020 was sold to Shaun's eldest son Richard who now operates as Monaro Timber and Joinery. After taking some time off for travel, home renovations and kicking back, Shaun established Woodknowlegy.
Much of the work shown on the web site pre dates Woodknowledgy and was done between 2002 and 2020. The experience gained is now what is shared through Woodknowledgy.
